HOW I MET MY HUSBAND
“No…no…no…” , I screamed. “I am not ready to meet anyone now. I am just 22 years old and till date, I have not enjoyed my life.” I had just completed my chartered accountancy course a few months ago and the five years of rigorous study made me sacrifice many joys.
Now, when I am planning to freak out, my parents are planning my matrimony. They said that this wonderful guy from Mumbai will suit me in all ways, and since he is here at Chennai only tomorrow, I have to meet him then. They also told me that I am at complete liberty to refuse him after our meeting. I agreed to meet the guy for my parent’s sake but my mischievous brain was up to other tricks.
At midnight, after the entire household fell asleep, me and my gang of friends had a long ‘conference call’ talk. I told them about this groom and the informal meeting at Café Coffee Day scheduled for the next day. We made up a super plan. Three of my girl friends (who are not known to my parents by sight) promised to gate-crash on us and act as if they are bosom buddies of this guy. Their close and chummy manner towards the groom would definitely put off my traditional parents and all marriage plans would come to a halt.
Reassured by all these plans, I set off the next day to meet this guy. He was tall, dark and handsome. He was polite and respectful to my parents and had an affectionate smile for me. His eyes seemed to clearly say that he had fallen for me.
His simplicity and good manners attracted me. In a corner of the café, nervously sipping cold coffee while our parents scrutinized us from a nearby table, we exchanged our first few words and that was when love dawned on us. As I sat mesmerized by his charms, I had completely forgotten about my frolicsome plan. As I turned and saw my friends seated at the next table, I was shocked.
I tried to indicate to them, by actions, to discard all our plans, but they continued to come towards us. I was flabbergasted. These girls are going to innocently ruin my love life. What a great blunder have I done! My friends continued to come towards us but instead of going straight to my guy, they came straight to me. They wished and hugged me. I was so relieved and I introduced them to all around.
As soon as I reached home, I called up my friends and thanked them profusely for not carrying out our plan. They replied that my face looked so love-struck that they did not have the heart to go on with our initial idea. Five months after that day, I got married. The special guests of that day were those three wonderful friends of mine.
